BETWEEN THE WALLS
DOCUMENTARY / 11 MINS / MANDARIN / CHINA
A living space is built with a lot of effort. It needs skill, precision, patience and a lot of hard work. But most of all it needs life. The people it inhabits and the stories it holds make it a possessor of invaluable culture and traditions. This film is about these stories and what goes into making them. It deals with the building & upkeep of historical red brick buildings in Daiwei Village, Longhai, about 70 kms away from Xiamen. The film explores the living and building of the great Chinese historical structures through portraits of its inhabitants, observations of its builders and an unknown relationship that they share with each other.
Made as part of the Looking China Youth Film Project held in China, the program invites filmmakers from all over the world to make films on themes related to the Chinese culture. I was a representative from India for the National Institute of Design this year along with my colleague.
